What is Octane?
Octane is a colorless, liquid chemical similar to gasoline, which is used as an additive (not a detergent) to gas or petrol. When petroleum, which is crude oil, is refined, we get gasoline (gas) or petrol. Octane is added to gasoline to improve the performance of your car’s engine.
Why is Octane necessary?
Octane is extremely important for modern car engines to run efficiently. Octane is what keeps the engine from auto-ignition, which is commonly referred to as knocking. Knocking occurs when the air-fuel mixture in the engine’s combustion chamber detonates prematurely. This will not only make driving unpleasant but is also extremely detrimental to your engine’s health.
Understanding the Different Types of Fuel
There are many different types of fuels. Some are so specialized that they’re not available in a typical gas station from a regular pump. However, the most common fuel available for traditional vehicles, including your Audi, are the three grades of gasoline obtainable in a normal gas station.
The number associated with the octane refers to its octane rating, which measures the fuel’s resistance to knocking. So a higher number means the fuel is better balanced, and your engine will knock less, and thus, will perform better.
The three kinds of fuel your Audi can use are:
- Regular Grade Unleaded 87: This has the lowest amount of octane but is good enough for most cars.
- Mid-grade Unleaded Between 88 – 90: This is better than regular, hence, it is better on your engine and not so harsh on your wallet.
- Premium Unleaded Between 91 – 94: This is the best when it comes to engine performance, and also the most expensive. Depending on the brand of gasoline, the gas station may offer a different level of octane, and the number will be different, likewise, they may use a different name. You may see the highest grade branded as Premium, Super Premium, Ultra, and Ultimate.

Different models of Audi are made for different performance levels. The general rule of thumb is a very high-performance engine will require premium-grade fuel. Some engines will work well with regular or mid-grade fuel.
So, Which One is It?
Audi recommends Premium grade (91 – 94) for all their models because, in general, premium grade fuel extends your engine’s longevity, as it reduces knocking, and lets the engine perform optimally.
